Director Jeffrey Blitz and producer Sean Welch talked with MakingOf about their documentary Lucky, which explores the lives of lottery winners after they hit it big.
Blitz and Welch found it extremely difficult to find cooperative lottery winners. “When these people win these large sums of money, one of the first things they do is really insulate themselves and disappear…With baby steps we were finally able to get some of the people in the film to participate.”
Sometimes during filming Blitz would let the winners go off on tangents, even when he knew in all likelihood that it would be unusable footage. ”You never know when it’s going to hit paydirt. So I feel like it’s worth it to be bored nine times out of ten if one time out of ten it’s amazing.”
