Director Nanette Burnstein talks ‘Going the Distance’

MakingOf recently talked with Nanette Burnstein, whose film Going the Distance comes to theaters this Friday.  In this exclusive interview, Burnstein talked about her transition from documentary filmmaker to fictional director.  For a documentary you need “casting, a great story, people who feel really comfortable on camera, and a great theme, which are the same things for a fiction film.”

She also shared how improv played a big part in the movie.  Working with comedy actors like Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, and Justin Long, there was almost a need to incorporate improv.  Burnstein shot each scene from the script and then at least once more using the actors improv abilities.  “We did more experimentation with the comedy, because comedy is really hard and it takes a lot of work to make it funny.”
