Director Adam McKay talks the comedy talent of ‘The Other Guys’ and shooting the ‘Imma Be’ 360 sequence

The Other Guys hits theaters tomorrow, August 6th. Watch this exclusive interview with filmmaker Adam McKay who takes us behind-the-scenes to share stories about working with veteran comedic actors and younger funnymen, including Rob Huebel,  Chris Gethard, and Ben Schwartz. And he talks to us about “flying by his pants” for the ‘Imma Be’ scene.

McKay never worries about bringing new actors into the fold. They are hired because their hilarity is already established. As McKay states, “The toughest thing is that these people are so talented and so good and they’re only getting like a day or a half day.” And yet that day or half day can count for so much more because working in these small parts gives the actors invaluable exposure and, as is the case with Chris Gethard, can lead to starring in your own show on Comedy Central (Big Lake). In this exclusive segment, McKay also breaks down the ‘Imma Be’ scene (named for the Black Eyed Peas song that accompanies the sequence). McKay used a technique not usually reserved for comedic films where the shot is frozen and the camera moves around the room, showing everything happening simultaneously. “The tricky thing with comedy is that you don’t want to be too fancy with the camera because it distracts from the character and the dialogue…but this one we felt like was clear storytelling.”

The Other Guys starring Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L. Jackson and Eva Mendes opens in theaters Friday, August 6th.
