“Toy Story 3” once again held the top spot in the box office, banking $59.3M in its second week. The third Toy Story installment has thus far grossed $226.9M and looks to continue its box office dominance, but should receive a challenge for the top spot this week.
Adam Sandler’s newest flick “Grown Ups” had a great showing in its first week, giving Toy Story a run for its money with $40.5M over the weekend. So far it looks as though the comedy will have a good run, with its appeal to both young and old audiences.
Coming in behind “Grown Ups,” Tom Cruise’s newest film “Knight and Day” opened with $20.1M, somewhat disappointing for the fact that it was released last Wednesday and made with a budget of $125M. Following “Knight and Day,” the martial arts action of “The Karate Kid” maintained its solid box office showing coming in with $15.5M, bringing its total domestic gross to $135.8M. Rounding out the top five was the action comedy “The A-Team” with $6.2M, followed by “Shrek Forever After” and “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.”
This week should bring a new box office champion to the group, with “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” expected to bring in droves of teenage girls to theaters who have waited intensely for the release of “Eclipse” all year. Thus far the film has received a 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, yet ratings have never seemed to matter when it comes to “The Twilight Saga.”
Also coming to theaters this week we have M. Night Shyamalan’s latest release, “The Last Airbender.” The film, based on the animated television series “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” is being released in 3D as well as 2D, so fans that have had problems with 3D can have the option of viewing the film how they choose.
No matter how things play out this weekend, it can be guaranteed that this weekend will bank huge numbers, as fans will be able to choose from a various array of big budget blockbusters.
