Weekly Wrap Up: Can Anybody Stop Shrek?

Reining supreme once again, “Shrek Forever After” topped the box office for the third straight week at $25.5M.  No doubt aided by the high price of 3D passes, the fourth Shrek installment was the clear winner, beating out it’s closest competitor, “Get Him To The Greek,” by $8M.

Greek, which has received rave reviews, thus far garnering a 75 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, came in at $17.6M.  With the comedic star power of Jonah Hill, Russell Brand, and Sean “Diddy” Combs, the movie should continue to compete atop the box office within the coming weeks.  To check out or exclusive MakingOf interview with “Get Him To The Greek” Director Nicholas Stoller, click here.

Coming in third was the Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl action-comedy flick “The Killers” at $15.8M, followed by Jerry Bruckheimer’s “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,” with the girls of “Sex and the City 2“ rounding out the top five.
Opening this week we have the TV show adaptation “The A-Team,” with a cast that includes Bradley Cooper, Liam Neeson, and the always attractive Jessica Biel.  Also hitting theaters is the remake of the 80′s classic “The Karate Kid,” which stars Will Smith’s son Jaden and Jackie Chan.

As Spring flows into Summer the box office becomes more and more unpredictable.  In the past six weeks there have been only two movies to top the charts (Shrek and “Iron Man 2“).  So will this week bring a new champion? With “The Karate Kid” cutting into Shrek’s audience it’s likely that one of the opening movies will sit atop the charts next week, but we’ll have to see how things play out.
