MakingOf Exclusive: MacGruber!

Bringing along the rubber bands, bubble gum, and other ordinary items that he uses in his regularly failed efforts to save himself and sidekick Vicky St. Elmo from certain death, MacGruber steps out of the Saturday night spotlight to hit theaters Friday May 21st.

The SNL spinoff has thus far accumulated rave reviews, the consensus being that we can expect the best SNL movie to hit theaters since the Mike Myers classic Wayne’s World. In these exclusive MakingOf interviews, we sit down with MacGruber stars Will Forte, Ryan Phillippe, Kristin Wiig, the always entertaining Val Kilmer, and director Jorma Tacone to talk about the experience of creating the 80′s action vibe, working on a tight schedule, and working with such a hilarious cast while making MacGruber.

In establishing a feel for the film, Tacone strove to create a “kind of late 80′s, early 90′s action kind of vibe.”  He talks about the techniques he used, stating “every time you see an exterior (shot) there’s a wet down” and with every single interior it’s “completely smoked out.”   Having lived through the 80′s and being fans of the the typical action style, both Forte and Tacone talk about how they didn’t necessarily need to research a ton to know exactly what they wanted to do with the film.  The two also stress that we shouldn’t expect a 90 minute version of the SNL sketch, that the film is “entirely its own thing,” which they feel is definitely for the better.  Great news for those of us who already love the sketch.

Phillippe, who plays Lt. Dixon Piper, is also a huge fan of the sketch.  He was “so excited when (he) got the call for the read through…read the script and laughed at every single page.”  Working with people as hilarious as Forte, Wiig, and Kilmer, the whole challenge for Phillippe was “not breaking and ruining a take.”  Definitely understandable, being that the movie was filmed in just 28 days, with long hours and six day work weeks.

Kilmer also talks about working with the hilarious cast, joking about how he wants to “run off and join the circus” with them.  All kidding aside though, it’s hard to imagine a better choice for the Dieter Von Cunth character than Kilmer.  When talking about the difference of playing comedic characters like Dieter compared to more dramatic roles, Kilmer, always the professional, said that it’s “always the same,” the trick being to follow what the director is looking for.

Riding the comedic abilities of all these actors, MacGruber should definitely challenge Iron Man 2 for the number one box office spot this weekend.  Click here to check out some movie clips and the trailer! here.
