Kathryn Bigelow was named the best director of 2009 by the Directors Guild of America for her work on the Iraq-war drama "The Hurt Locker." This year’s awards ceremony marks the first time in the DGA’s history a female director was awarded their top prize. Bigelow won out over the following nominees: James Cameron ("Avatar"), Jason Reitman ("Up in the Air"), Lee Daniels ("Precious"), and Quentin Tarantino ("Inglourious Basterds").
The DGA Awards are viewed within the industry as a reliable forecaster for the Academy Awards – the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the DGA have chosen different directors just six times in the last 61 years.
Upon receiving the award, Bigelow called it "the most incredible moment of my life."
